Implement PKI?
Hi! I have to implement a public key infrastructure which must have one offline root CA connected to an hardware server module , one online CA which has to issue certificates for my users from active directory. I’m using win server 2003 for active directory and for the rest i’m using win server 2008 with ocsp. I have some ideas of how to create this pki but there’s a lot of things to order and i would apreciate some kind of step -by – step guide for this or maybe some advice for best practice. Thanks a lot, and sorry my poor english.
As it happens, I did just that recently. I was using Linux and openSSL, but the principle is the same.
You will find it to be a confusing and wild ride.
I recommend the book “Planning for PKI” by Russ Housley and Tim Polk.
What exactly are you certificating? What is the unique identifier? Is your certificate profile already defined or do you have to come up with it? Do you have a CP and CPS document? What physical facilities do you have to hold the root? How long a chain will you permit? Will you sign off subs or directly off the root? How will you validate user identities? Will you be applying for WebTrust certification?
The issues go on and on. email me if you have specific questions.
Good Luck.
Thankyou for asking a security question. They are pretty rare in the security section.
