Alcohol at a Wedding Reception is Expensive… But You Can Make It Affordable

Modern brides and grooms typically serve alcohol at their wedding.  But most face sticker shock when confronted with the alcohol “packages” offered by caterers or wedding banquet halls. 

 

Since this part of the wedding budget is significant, most couples would like to take some control of it so more resources are left over for other equally or more important items.

 

Often couples will request that they provide their own alcohol.  This may be allowed at some venues, but in at least some states, those banquet halls and wedding venues who have alcohol licenses are forbidden to allow “outside” alcohol into their facility by the state alcohol board.  If a facility does this, it can lead to the loss of their alcohol license.

 

Knowing that the cost of alcohol is a burden on couples, the managers of Woodrow Hall (www.WoodrowHall.com) in NE Birmingham, AL, have come up with a few ideas on how couples can save. 

 

First and foremost, the most expensive alcohol choice is an open bar.  An open bar can be abused by your guests and can lead to intoxication, something most couples would not have to deal with on “their” day.  If you do chose an “open bar”, you can limit the amount of time the bar is open to limit your total drink costs.

 

We have come to expect that couples attempt to negotiate with us on this item, and we hate to say it, but we have had to come to the table in these tough economic times and work with our couples.  We have also found that a token system, where the couple purchases a certain number of drinks, has become popular.  We “sell” the tokens to the couple for a few dollars each and they are in charge of distributing them.  That allows them to control their total cost.  This option is typically tied to a cash bar where their guests can purchase additional drinks or premium drinks on their own.  We have not seen any problems with guests when this option is chosen.

 

We have had a number of couples this year choose a theme drink as their only drink.  It is usually tinted a color that coordinates with the bride maid dresses or the theme color of the wedding.  It is supplemented by non alcoholic drinks.  Since it does contain alcohol a bar tender is still in charge of dispensing it to keep the younger guests honest!

 

Occasionally couples will only offer wine as the official drink.  They can choose from a wide variety of colors and prices and can meet their budget easily.  Some will offer beer along with the wine but the idea is to avoid the more expensive distilled drinks. 

 

Finally, we have seen an increased trend toward having an open bar up to a limit on the total number or cost of drinks.  The bar then becomes a “cash” bar to allow the guests who wish more to purchase drinks on their own.

 

Alcohol can be made an affordable offering at your wedding if you work with the management of your chosen venue.  Make sure to do all of the negotiating before signing a contract as once you have locked in the venue, any additional selections are not as flexibly priced!
