How do I buy lumber?

Say if I go in and I want to make a playhouse for the kids or bookshelf for me…. what do I ask for?

I know that you can get 2 by 4′s… but that is not what I need

Also, when you order it… like a big piece of plywood, do I say the measurement… do they cut it up for me…. or do I buy the whole thing.. even if it doesn’t fit in the van?

If you buy from a diy store you can usually have sheet materials cut to size. This may be more convenient for you so you are not left with a lot of material over, and overcomes the difficulties of sawing at home. Some builders merchants or lumber yards have minimum order quantities so you need to check this too.

For framing the timber you will want to buy is described as PAR (planed all round). The 2 x 4 normally comes sawn and is for carpentry work and can give splinters. Note PAR sizes are generally about an 1/8th inch smaller all round. Softwood comes in standard sizes (metric in the UK), and are normally 25mm, 32 mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm. in combinations of these widths – these are based on the old sizes if inch, inch and a quarter/half and so on. Sort of size you might want to use is 50x25mm (2×1 inches) or 50x50mm (2×2 inches). Not all sizes are available in stock – so again you need to check. You usually buy by the metre, and the supplier chooses the length of individual bits. If you need a particularly long piece say 5.4m metres you need to specify this so they can order it in. many diy chanins produce catalogues – try to get hold of one (or download) and you will see what is available – and which are the most economic sizes. (Always helps to know which continent you are on for sizes btw)

For bookshelves you have choice of standard width manufactured boards say 150mm, 225, 300, 400, 450, 600, and so on, and these may again be a better bet. You can get them pre-finished (melamine faced) so are very easy to use.

The cheaper builders’ suppliers tend to only deal with regular sized panels (normally 1.2m by 2.4m – or 8×4 as they are still callled referring to their imperial sizes) but they usually give free delivery – phone round and check.
