Is it true that the verizon blackberry curve 8530 is unable to be unlocked.?

I bought the verizon phone super cheap from a friend. I was almost positive I would be able to unlock it in no time and be able to use it on another server like virgin mobile. But someone told me that I would be unable to unlock it because of the phones version for it being a 8530.
